Don't Be Deterred: Off the Beaten Path Rocky Beach Worth a Visit (Little Compton, RI)
Standing on Lloyd's Beach and looking north to Rhode Island Road. |
There's no sandwich shop, ice cream, lifeguard, or even a bathroom. The northern section of Lloyd's Beach is covered by smooth rocks, while the southern tip is often awash in pungent seaweed. Small patches of sand can be found, but don't expect a Carribean style picture perfect experience.
The importance of bringing an oversized beach towel cannot be overstated, because flies make their habitat in and around all that seaweed and cannot be avoided. Swimming at Lloyd's Beach is one of life's great pleasures - there are no pesky lifeguards blowing their whistles. Disclaimer: only experienced and confident swimmers should venture past their knees. South Shore Beach (which has the benefit of lifeguards) may be a better option for beginners, children, and elderly.
While the lack of amenities succeeds in keeping away many out of towners, finding a parking spot around Lloyd's Beach has become increasingly difficult as revelers travel from afar in search of a 'free beach'. Road Island Road has become a de facto parking lot, while homeowners on Ohio Road and Maryland Road sometimes have to ask illegally parked cars to leave the premises. Nevertheless, Lloyd's Beach is still a top choice for many LC locals.
