Little Compton Town Council 2002 Democrats 'Vote for all 5'

Image
Little Compton has always attracted qualified and competent citizens willing to run for town office, and this election cycle was no exception. Democrats throwing their hat into the 2002 Town Council race were Mark DeSouza, Alex Goulart, Henry Laferriere, Richard Lisle, and Johanna McKenzie. I can't remember which of these candidates prevailed in the 2002 election, however each one of them is civically minded with reputations for giving back to their community. Although partisan politics has become more prevalent over the years, it wasn't uncommon for political opposites in Little Compton to sign each other's nomination papers. Let's hope that Little Compton continues to set such a fine example of political collegiality. Little Compton, RI Summer Beach Lockers (LC) by Fiedler_Mundt

'The Burgess Cottage, Little Compton, RI' Vintage Postcard

Image
The Burgess Cottage looked to be a relaxing homestead. Yesteryear, Little Compton. I don't know much about The Burgess Cottage, or even where the house is located in town. Is it still standing or was it replaced by a much larger McMansion, as has become more common in recent decades? Alternatively, The Burgess Cottage may still be among us, but remodeled beyond recognition. Do you have any information about The Burgess Cottage? Please share it below! This postcard, while interesting, doesn't provide any clues beyond the front photo. Unfortunately, the back 'message' section is blank. Little Compton, RI LC by Fiedler_Mundt

'Gateway, Sakonnet, R. I.' Postcard, Published by Sakonnet Transportation Co. - 1912 - 'Great Scenery' of Lloyd's Beach

Image
The entrance to present day Lloyd's Beach is displayed in this 1912 postcard. The entrance and beach look much the same, although Lloyd's Beach appears considerably less rocky in this 1912 postcard than it is today. An unpaved road of sand leads up to the imposing entrance, and dunes can be seen in the distance.  A one cent stamp made sure this 1912 postcard made it from Little Compton to Boston. Although the handwriting is a bit shaky, the postcard sender emphasized the 'great scenery' of Sakonnet and Little Compton, RI. Back in 1912, Sakonnet has its own postmark and the 'Gateway' to Lloyd's Beach was something visitors traveled long distances to see.  Produced for the Sakonnet Transportation Co. of Sakonnet, RI, the postcard appears to have been a marketing tool to encourage tourism to the beaches of Little Compton. Like other postcards of the era, 'Gateway, Sakonnet, RI' was made in Germany by B.Y. and Co. Sakonnet Point breakwater, Little C
