'Gateway, Sakonnet, R. I.' Postcard, Published by Sakonnet Transportation Co. - 1912 - 'Great Scenery' of Lloyd's Beach

Lloyd's Beach on a sunny day in the early 1900s.
The entrance to present day Lloyd's Beach is displayed in this 1912 postcard.
The entrance and beach look much the same, although Lloyd's Beach appears considerably less rocky in this 1912 postcard than it is today. An unpaved road of sand leads up to the imposing entrance, and dunes can be seen in the distance.

Postcard was postmarked in Sakonnet on August 23, 1912.
A one cent stamp made sure this 1912 postcard made it from Little Compton to Boston.

Although the handwriting is a bit shaky, the postcard sender emphasized the 'great scenery' of Sakonnet and Little Compton, RI. Back in 1912, Sakonnet has its own postmark and the 'Gateway' to Lloyd's Beach was something visitors traveled long distances to see.

Produced for the Sakonnet Transportation Co. of Sakonnet, RI, the postcard appears to have been a marketing tool to encourage tourism to the beaches of Little Compton. Like other postcards of the era, 'Gateway, Sakonnet, RI' was made in Germany by B.Y. and Co.
